Stop Hasty Play

This simple tip comes from a very old Bridge classic . The book is as old as me-published in 1945. It is 'Why You Lose at Bridge' by S.J. Simon.

He thought that one of the main faults of most declarers was hasty play, especially at trick 1. Though he conceded that the usual advice to count winners and losers and making a plan was very sound, he also thought it was very difficult for some players to acquire this habit.

His additional advice was:
Never win a trick until you have decided what card you are going to play to the next trick.

This has the advantage of slowing down 'speed-merchants'. The second thing that may happen is that you may change the card you are about to play. Finally, he argued that it may start a train of thought as to how you plan the whole hand!

As a bonus, it should not take any extra time, as you still have to think what you are going to play to the next trick after you have won the present one!
